To get on TikTok's For You page, a video has to hold viewers: the algorithm looks first at whether people watch it to the end and how they react. According to TikTok itself, follower count isn't a direct factor, and the number of videos you post doesn't affect how they're recommended. Below: how the TikTok algorithm works per the platform's own docs, what keeps videos off the For You page, why you get no views and what to do about it.
How the TikTok algorithm works
The For You feed (FYP) is built for each person individually. TikTok describes three groups of signals:
- User interactions — what people watch, like, comment on, share, who they follow and which videos they skip.
- Video information — caption, sound, hashtags, video length, posting time and region.
- Device and account settings — language, country, device type. TikTok says plainly these get lower weight than other signals.
For each video the system predicts how likely a specific person is to finish it, like it, share it, comment, follow the creator — or skip it and tap "Not interested". These predictions combine into an overall score, and the highest-scoring videos make the feed.

What weighs most. A strong signal is someone watching a longer video from start to finish. A weak one is, for example, the creator and viewer being in the same country. So retention is the key metric for creators.
Diversity. The algorithm deliberately mixes in videos outside your interests and won't show two videos in a row from the same creator or with the same sound. That means even a new account has a chance to reach a new audience.
TikTok algorithm myths

- "You can't get on the FYP without followers." False. Per TikTok, neither follower count nor past viral videos are direct recommendation factors. Followers give more initial views, but the reaction to the specific video decides.
- "You have to post 5 videos a day." TikTok says plainly: the number of videos you post doesn't affect how your content is recommended. Frequency matters for your testing and experience, not for the algorithm.
- "If a video doesn't take off in an hour, it's dead." Engagement can build over several days, and TikTok advises keeping the video up and giving it time.
- "Hashtags decide everything." Hashtags are one signal about a video's topic, not a magic button. Use 3–5 relevant ones, not #fyp on everything.
- "There's one key metric." TikTok says no single engagement metric is more important than another — look at the whole picture.
What definitely won't be recommended
Some videos won't be shown on the For You page no matter how well they're made:
- Duplicates and spam — reuploads, identical videos, spam content.
- Videos that were just uploaded or are under review — until the review is done.
- Content from accounts under 16 — not recommended in For You.
- Content not suitable for a broad audience — such as graphic scenes.
- Undisclosed ads — if a video promotes a product or service without the commercial content disclosure setting, it's ineligible for the FYF.
- Banned topics — such as gambling promotion.
Before posting, you can check a video in TikTok Studio: the Content Check Lite tool shows whether content may be eligible for recommendation.
How to get on the TikTok For You page: 10 steps
- Shoot vertically and make videos longer than 5 seconds — that's TikTok's own advice.
- A hook in the first seconds. A question, a result or a surprising fact right away, no intros.
- Hold viewers to the end. Cut pauses and filler, give a reason to keep watching: "I'll show the result at the end".
- One topic per account. The algorithm matches viewers by interest — a clear topic makes your audience easier to find.
- Caption, sound and hashtags that match the video. These are the signals TikTok uses to understand what it's about.
- Trending sounds — when they fit the video, not just to tick a box.
- Prompt a reaction: a question at the end, a bold opinion, a useful tip worth saving and sharing.
- Original content only — duplicates and reuploads aren't recommended.
- Don't delete videos right away — give them a few days.
- Check your analytics and make more of what holds viewers.

Why you get no views on TikTok and what to do

- 0 views. The video may be under review or breaking the rules. Check the account status section in settings and the content check in TikTok Studio.
- Views start, then stop fast. Viewers leave in the first seconds. Check in analytics at which second retention drops and rework the opening.
- People watch to the end but few likes and saves. Not enough value or emotion — give a specific tip, a result, a story.
- Views but no follows. It's unclear why to follow: set up your profile and stick to one topic.
- All videos dropped suddenly. Check for violations and whether you started posting duplicates or undisclosed ads.
When to post on TikTok
TikTok doesn't name an official "best time" — posting time is just one signal. Go by your audience: TikTok analytics shows when your followers are most active. Post shortly before the peak and compare results.

FAQ
How does a new account get on the For You page?
Make videos people watch to the end: a strong hook, one topic, original content. You don't need followers — TikTok doesn't treat them as a direct factor.
Does follower count affect recommendations?
Not directly, per TikTok. Followers bring more initial views, but viewers' reactions are what push a video onto the FYP.
How many videos a day should I post to get on the FYP?
The number of videos doesn't affect recommendations. Post as many as you can make well — frequency is for testing, not for the algorithm.
Do hashtags matter on TikTok?
Yes, as a signal of the video's topic. 3–5 relevant hashtags work better than a pile of popular tags.
How long until a video gets recommended?
Sometimes right away, sometimes after a few days. TikTok advises keeping the video up and giving it time.
Why isn't my video getting recommended?
Most often — low retention in the first seconds. Less often — a rule violation, a duplicate of someone else's content or an undisclosed ad.
